No, you’re not seeing things; our star wide-receiver is wearing pigtails.
Our annual gender swapped tradition is coming up. If you don’t know what Powderpuff is, it’s a school fundraising tradition where the girls play flag football and the boys are the cheerleaders.
Prior to the big game, the girls are trained by the football players and the new male cheerleaders by the current cheerleaders. The boys even develop their own cheer routine during half-time.
The junior class is holding the event November 16 from 1-4 p.m. at Pat Tarquinio field. The cost to participate is $15, and that price is for anyone participating in the game, coaching, or cheering. The fee includes a 2024 Powder Puff t-shirt.
All girls from grades 9-12 are allowed to participate, and all boys (grades 9-12) who participate in cheering will cheer all four games.
The teams will be based on grade, and all football players who want to coach will only coach their respective grade.
Don’t want to take the field? No problem. Spectators are welcome at $5 a ticket. Tickets will be sold the week before the big event.
So, why do we have the Powderpuff event in the first place? Well, it has been a tradition in many high schools since the 1950s, and remember: at Beaver Area, tradition dictates a standard of excellence. Also, all of the proceeds go to the junior class for funding major events, and arguably the most major of them all, prom.
Ms. Courtney Bauder, Powderpuuff sponsor, thinks “it’s a cool event and will be pretty fun if we have a good amount of participation. I did Powderpuff when I was in high school, and I think it’s fun that now I’m organizing the event.”
While the event might seem a bit old-fashioned, most see Powderpuff as a good way to garner school spirit and a fun way to fundraise for the junior class events rather than asking for donations directly.
So support the junior class, fund prom, and have some fun. Be sure to participate or spectate the annual Powderpuff game. And to the people participating, may the odds be forever in your favor!
