Three out of four years going to the WPIAL finals is no sweat off the backs of these basketball Bobcats.
March 9, the Bobcats played their last home game of the season.
The game tipped off at 6 p.m. After a long game, the Bobcats pulled it out against the Knoch Knights 40-22 in this semi-final match-up.
Senior point guard Emma Pavelek led the Cats with an outstanding 22 point. The Weiland twins, nicknamed the “Twin Towers” by a local radio hosts because they both stand 6 feet tall, also netted many points propelling the Bobcats to their win: Kenizie had 18 points followed by Maddi with 17.
The Bobcats then went on to face section rival, the Quaker Valley Quakers, for the 4A WPIAL title. They tipped off at Peters Township High School in the AHN Arena at 5 p.m.
And as we all expected, (school) history was made.
The Bobcats defeated the Quakers 45-29 for the first WPIAL title in Bobcat basketball history.
“Winning the championships was one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. Finally being able to accomplish that goal while making history in the process is just amazing. I can think of a better feeling,” stated Maddi Weiland.
The game was tough at the beginning as the Bobcats were behind at the end of the first quarter.
They held the Quakers to four points in the second quarter and none in the third quarter.
The Bobcats also had some trouble in the beginning as Pavelek and junior Payton List both were in foul trouble in the first half of the game. List would later foul out of the game in the fourth quarter due to a terrible foul call.
But fouling out didn’t foul the mood.
“[Winning] felt unreal, like ‘OMG, we made it, but not only did we make it, we won the WPIAL!’ It really felt amazing to win the championship with my girls,” added List.
“It was the best feeling ever. I want to relive the moment we won and have the feeling again. We extended the night as long as we could and it was so fun,” exclaimed senior Anna Blum.
“Knowing that all of us have put in the countless hours of hard work to get there and come out on top is the most rewarding feeling. Winning the WPIAL our senior year was something all five seniors have dreamed about since we were freshmen, and being able to go out and actually accomplish it just makes it that much more rewarding,” added Kenzie Weiland.
This team was the first basketball team, boys or girls, to ever win a WPIAL title in the history of Beaver Area School District. The Bobcats made history before by being the first team to make it to the WPIAL finals and also to make it the furthest in the state tournament.
“Winning the WPIAL felt so good because we finally completed that goal after losing two championships prior to this year,” said senior Natalie Priest.
“It felt like a dream when that buzzer went off and the team was running towards each other to celebrate. I couldn’t be more proud of us and what we’ve accomplished,” finally added Pavelek.
Coach Huston and the Bobcats’ run at the state title began and sadly ended against the Villa Maria Hurricanes March 20 with the game recap in the next issue.
