SHOUT it out! Day of Giving is back and better than ever!
This year’s Day of Giving is being organized by SHOUT, which is sponsored by Ms. Aimee Firmani and Mrs. Heather Bixler. It will be held November 24.
The Day of Giving started in 2019, and was first sponsored by Y-AP (Youth Ambassador Program). During the past DoG event, the band, orchestra, and chorus performed in nursing homes, students made blankets for the less fortunate, cards for the people in nursing homes and military service personnel, and helped clean up the cemetery.
“I remember making cards [for Day of Giving] with my friend in Mr. Ortmann’s room! It was really fun!” said sophomore Hanna Ours.
Unfortunately, Day of Giving was not held last year due to COVID restrictions, but students are excited to restart this great tradition.
“I really enjoyed traveling to Friendship Ridge and making the people there happy. It was also great to play with the orchestra and chorus,” said senior Becca Mizer.
As in the previous Day of Giving, students will be able to choose which activity they want to do on the Day of Giving. A google survey with all of the options for Day of Giving will likely be pushed out the week of November 8, according to Mrs. Bixler.
This year, SHOUT anticipates a variety of options to choose from. Nothing is set in stone yet, so stay tuned for the survey. However, the music department will be caroling in downtown Beaver, as nursing homes aren’t a possibility due to ongoing COVID restrictions.
Other giving options include making thank-you cards for healthcare workers, packing bagged lunches for students over the break, and doing planting around campus.
For the more artistic students, there also will be the option to help paint a mural in the cafeteria.
“Mrs. Steffes and Ms. Zahn will be helping us with the mural in the cafeteria. It’s going to be awesome; it’s a four-day process, ” Mrs. Bixler explained.
The mural will have a “Tree of Life” theme, and will include handprints from students, a play on the name of the SHOUT organization, Social Handprints Overcoming Unjust Treatment. It will have themes of equity and inclusion.
“I’m really happy to be giving back to people in need,” said SHOUT member sophomore Cailin Downer.
The Day of Giving, November 24, is the half day before Thanksgiving break.
