New year, new inductees.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio was founded in 1983. The main job of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is to honor and induct bands, producers, solo artists, and others who have had a lasting impact on rock music.
To be eligible to get into the Hall of Fame, the nominees need to have their first album be at least 25 years old and their contributions to rock and roll as a genre recognized.
The first inductees to the Hall of Fame were in 1986 and naturally included a large section of iconic 50’s musicians such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Jerry Lee Lewis. These earlier inductees helped shape the original sound of rock and roll, combining the original blues, gospel, folk, and other genres to make the rock style.
As the history of music continued to evolve, the Hall of Fame began to change who they inducted, beginning to allow pop, rap and the occasional metal band including Madonna, Beastie Boys, and Bon Jovi. Even influential radio DJs like Alan Freed and producers and music executives like Ahmet Ertegun have even been inducted.
This year, the list of seven inductees cover a wide range of music. The inductees are: Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Radiohead, Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, The Cure, and the Zombies. These inductees span the late 60s (Zombies) and into the 90s (Radiohead and Jackson).
But just being eligible and getting nominated for induction is no guarantee. Some artists get selected right away while others get passed over.
Def Leppard is being inducted after their first nomination. However, this is Janet Jackson’s third nomination that is getting her added to the list of inductees. Radiohead has been nominated the past two years. This is Stevie Nicks and Roxy Music’s first nomination that is getting them into the Hall of Fame. The Cure was nominated back in 2012, but this is the year they’re being inducted. Lastly, The Zombies had been nominated four times, 2014, 2017, 2018 and now finally are being inducted in 2019.
All of these artists have helped transform the history of rock and roll in some way. They changed the genre for the better by adding new sounds and releasing songs that helped to change the way we think of music.
These seven artists will officially join other legends March 29 during the official induction ceremony held at Barclays Center, New York.
