The annual Beaver Area High School musical is a longstanding tradition that not even COVID can break. Every spring, Mrs. Susan Metelsky directs a show-stopping performance made up of talented middle and high school students. While this year is no different, there are changes to the routine.
This year’s musical, Godspell, will be performed in the Beaver Area High School auditorium—but for a limited audience to comply with distancing restrictions. It will be staged June 4 at 7:30 p.m., June 5 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and June 6 at 2 p.m.
The show, written by John-Micheal Tebelak and composed by Stephen Schwartz, reenacts parables from the Bible within an overarching plot of a town coming together after Jesus’s crucifixion.
Leads Spencer Hagen and Jonah Janicki portray Jesus and Judas in the parables.
“The show is really coming along,” Mrs. Metelsky exclaimed. “Students have been working on vocals and choreography, and the scenes have been really coming together. I am very proud of the efforts of the cast.”
The students involved in this year’s production are excited to share the fruits of their hard work, and the fruits of the spirit with audiences this spring. After COVID cancelled last year’s show, My Favorite Year, right before the production was scheduled to debut, many are glad that they’re able to continue the tradition this year.
“It’s been an amazing opportunity,” junior Grace Jessel expressed. “After the cancellation last year, everyone’s approached this year with more enthusiasm than usual, and the energy on stage is going towards a really great show!”
