As autumn approaches, it’s time to, however regretfully, leave behind our summer wardrobe and prepare for cooler weather. That doesn’t mean style has to go by the wayside, however. This year’s autumn trends are enough to fall in love with, incorporating classic looks with a new feel.
Y2K is back! When Covid hit, we were left reminiscing about days where we could venture into the great, big, world without fear. Many turned to the early 2000s’, and in doing so, brought back some of the most nostalgic looks from the era.
This autumn we’re likely to see low-rise jeans make a comeback—but hopefully not whale tails. More returning styles are the casual accessory of trucker hats and the ever-adorable butterfly print. You may have already even seen some fuzzy patterned fabrics when back-to-school shopping, a classic Y2K look that provides the perfect cozy autumn vibes.
Even high-end designers have been cashing in on the 2000s comeback. Saint Laurent’s upcoming collection features fur-lined skirts and sleeves, along with leather pants, metallic fabrics, and bold colors for days.
It’s not all sunshine and nostalgia at Saint Laurent, however. Some of the pieces feature more neutral tones and down-to-Earth looks, making them an easy blend into the current climate.
As Anthony Vaccarello, creative director for Saint Laurent, told Vogue: “After the last couple of years we can’t just go back, otherwise we will lose what we all lived through.”
Not everyone agrees with Vaccarello’s sentiment. It seems that others are ready for a (hopefully) fully-vaccinated population to enter a Roaring 20’s-esque post-pandemic world. That being said, one may notice a rise in party or club-themed outfits being worn in day-to-day life.
Funky patterned tights, mesh tops, and plaid prints are all selling quickly, highlighting the desire to return to fun and energetic times.
The most important thing to remember is that while trends and fashion come and go, style is eternal.
