The girls golf team teed off the season with a busy schedule.
The girls team currently is placed third in their section—meaning their shot at WPIALs hangs in the balance. (Only the top two teams make it.)
This year is the first the district was able to put together a full girls golf team. In the 2021 and 2022 seasons girls competed on the boys golf team. Last year the Ladycats separated from the boys team and played other school districts but only as a club team.
The first week of matches the Ladycats took three section wins against Sewickley Academy August 13, Seton Lasalle August 14, and Ellwood City August 15.
The girls got their lowest record of the season at a 198 against Ellwood City.
“[Ellwood] tried to put up a fight but the fight wasn’t good enough to top us; I’m so proud of this team and what we accomplished this first week,” said senior Ava Mrkonja.
The following week was when things got intense. The Ladycats secured another win at their home course, Seven Oaks Country Club, against Ambridge August 19, to jump into the big match against Shadyside Academy August 21, on a high note.
Shadyside is number one in the section, but that didn’t stop them from competing. The team did well with top scores from senior Jill Dinsmore followed by sophomore Annsley Baker and Mrkonja.
Unfortunately the Ladycats owned up to their second section loss after losing to Central Valley the week prior falling to Shadyside 190-211.
After the two losses to Shadyside and Central Valley, it was time to get a comeback during the rematch against Central Valley August 26. The Cats sent the Warriors home with a tough loss. This was a big win for the Bobcats with a score of 199-207.
The next loss for the Ladycats was against North Catholic August 28.
The Trojans are sitting second in the section, and the only team that they haven’t played yet that could give them a run for their money is Seton Lasalle. The four teams that have broken a score of 200 consistently as a team are Shadyside, North Catholic, Seton Lasalle and Beaver.
In order for the Ladycats to secure their second place and make it to WPIALs North Catholic must lose to Seton Lasalle, since Beaver has beaten Seton Lasalle twice.
September 4, Beaver Area secured their second win against Sewickley Academy which puts the Ladycats 6-3 going into their last week of matches before attempting WPIALs.
“Next week is a big week for us; we have to come out determined and ready to win if we want to make a run in WPIALs,” said Dinsmore.
