Even after a heart-wrenching one-point defeat October 26, the Beaver Area football team will continue their season’s playoff run. The cold and rainy weather conditions that Friday night played a role in the defeat at the paws of the Blackhawk Cougars.
“The weather has been a problem for us all year; it feels like we are always playing in rainy or windy weather which really puts a damper on our offensive passing game,” said senior wide receiver Mason Rose.
Despite inclement weather, the Beaver Area community and school still traveled to Chippewa to cheer on the Bobcats.
“Even though the Blackhawk game did not end as we would have liked, I am proud of our team’s competitive spirit and consistent winning efforts throughout the night. Our school and community support was great, even in poor weather conditions,” said head coach Dr. Jeff Beltz.
It was a close game through every quarter; the Beaver players never stopped fighting. Even through some injuries in the line the team held a close score, ending the game 14-13.
Blackhawk was the first to put up points, but not long after senior wide receiver Zach Hansen tied up the game.
Following Hansen’s touchdown senior quarterback Brodie List scored another touchdown, but Beckett Connelly’s point-after was blocked allowing Beaver to lead 13-7 at halftime.
But in the waning minutes of the game Blackhawk scored a touchdown tying the score, they secured the extra point, and the game ended 14-13 in their favor.
“It was a hard fought game that I thought we all played well; they just came out on top,” said junior lineman Dante Castagna.
Despite the loss, the Bobcats’ regular season performance guaranteed them a playoff spot—just not home-field advantage. The Cats travelled to Belle Vernon November 2. Be sure to check next week’s ECHO for coverage of the match-up (and excessive Twitter smack-talking).
