A winning season may be off the books for the Beaver Area girls basketball team.
The lady cats are currently 4-5 in conference games while 7-12 overall. But that doesn’t mean it’s all bad news.
Following a hard loss against section leaders Blackhawk the Lady Cats prepared for their away game against Hopewell January 25.
The game was exciting and seemed to be a back-and-forth between the teams, but the Bobcats failed to gain enough momentum to pull a win. The final score was 34-31 with the Bobcats having a quiet bus ride home.
This loss was disappointing for Beaver Area because in their previous game against the Vikings Beaver Area pulled off an impressive win by seven points.
Freshman Ansley Baker was the lead scorer with 13 points with junior Kylie Conley assisting her while scoring 9 points.
Despite two losses in a row the Bobcats held their heads high and were looking for a win against the Quaker Valley Quakers January 29.
The Lady Cats were unsuccessful and lost yet another extremely close game. The final score was 45-39. This score was nearly identical to the Bobcats' previous tip-off against the Quakers where they lost by 7.
These losses do not determine the Bobcats’ skill or ability but rather their inability to have a final push in the fourth quarter to score valuable points.
The Quaker Valley game was also the Bobcat class of 2024 senior night. The basketball team honored their two seniors, Lauren Nesbella and Chloe Desanzo, with a ceremony before the game.
Tensions were high as the Bobcats were on a three-game losing streak heading into rivalry night against the Central Valley Warriors. The game was away, but the Bobcats were confident in their ability to win the February 1 match-up.
The Warrior game is always exciting because both teams have nearly identical skill sets and standout players. Not surprisingly, the game ended up going into overtime, but the Bobcats lost 51-50.
Despite the loss the Lady Cats played their hearts out and did not have anything to be dissatisfied with.
Four days later the Lady Cats returned home to play against the Ambridge Bridgers February 5. Hopes were high for this game and the Bobcats were ready to not only win but crush the small Bridger team.
The Ambridge team proved to be too small and they had to forfeit due to not having enough players. This was a technical Beaver Area win officially breaking their losing streak on the record books.
The Bobcats will finish their season with their last games against Blackhawk February 8 and Pine Richland February 12.
