With the departure of Principal Dr. Meghan Murray (who took a position with the Allegheny IU) and Assistant Principal Sean Snowden becoming the new principal early in the school year, Beaver Area was on the hunt for a new assistant principal.
And they found that person in their own backyard.
You may remember Mrs. Michelle Murphy from elementary school; she may have taught you printing and addition in first grade, but now she’s your new assistant principal. Let’s get to know her a little better . . .
Where did you go to high school?
I graduated from Beaver Area in 1999.
Where did you go to college?
I went to Westminster College for my Bachelors degree, the University of Pittsburgh for my Masters degree, and received my Principal Certificate from Point Park University. I also studied abroad in college and went to universities in Mexico, Argentina, and Spain. If you ever get a change to study abroad in high school or college, DO IT!
What was your job before this?
I taught first grade for 15 years at Dutch Ridge and College Square [elementary schools].
Is this the job you’ve always wanted, or did your original path change and lead you to education?
I always wanted to be a teacher and eventually a principal. Before teaching, I was in banking.
What is something you want the students to know about you?
I volunteer for PEARL (Parrot Rescue of Pittsburgh). I have three pet birds of my own, but also foster others and help them find new homes.
What is your favorite part of your job?
I love getting to know the students! Many of you I had from first grade, or I at least remember you. I wish you would all stop growing and stay little and cute, but it sure is nice watching you grow up. It makes me feel so proud!
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
The most satisfying part of my job is knowing that I play a small but hopefully important part in helping you all grow and learn.
If you had the opportunity to teach a subject, which one would you pick?
Spanish or science.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my grandmother. She passed away a few years ago, but she always knew what to say when I was having a problem or worried about something. She was so positive and always encouraged me to follow my dreams!
What is one thing you wish the students would take away from you?
I want you all to remember that life is short. It may not seem like that right now because you are young. Take advantage of every opportunity given to you, whether it is at school or in the community. Aim for the stars and remember . . . you can do hard things!
What is the hardest part of your job?
The hardest part of my job is getting everything done for the day. I have a lot to do, but it is so worth it. I am excited to finally be here at the high school.
What is a common misconception about your job you’d like to set right?
I guess a common misconception is that I only deal with discipline issues. I want everyone to behave of course and go to class, but I get the chance to attend sporting events, concerts, and other award ceremonies. Have I mentioned that I am proud of you all?
