Some flicks were flops . . .
Mixed feelings for the year and mixed feelings for the newest movie releases create intrigue. Theaters suffered some hard blows because of COVID and increased subscriptions for streaming services. That means 2022 was arguably the first “building” year back for the theaters. There were some very low lows and of course some high highs. These are the opinions of fellow students who were asked for the best and worst movies of the year! So how do our fellow students rank the year’s movie choices?
The Top 10 Movies of 2022:
10. Hocus Pocus 2- On Disney Plus, the sequel to the 1993 classic Halloween movie proved to be a success, with the classic cast coming back for a second time around.
9. Where the Crawdads Sing- Every mom’s favorite movie of the year! The New York Times best-selling book was turned into a thriller drama in 2022. We also got a Taylor Swift song out of it.
8. Smile- The creepiest movie of the year. This physiological horror movie created nightmares.
7. Minions- The biggest surprise of the year. This movie was made for children but was watched almost exclusively by teenagers in suits (thanks a lot, TikTok), creating insane box office statistics.
6. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness- Arguably the only successful Marvel movie from 2022. There were record numbers of crossovers and hints to other Marvel TV series and started a wildly successful summer for the cinema.
5. Uncharted- A blockbuster cast carried this adventure movie. A watch for all ages and a fun treasure hunt to see. Starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, everyone likes Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
4. Nope- After over a year of ads in cinemas this much anticipated movie was a hit science fiction movie and proved the skills of the star studded cast that included Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Keith David.
3. Elvis- When Tom Hanks is in any movie it can’t be that bad, but Elvis was obviously the hit drama of the year. Adam Butler portrayed Elvis Presley and his life behind the glitz and glamor of fame. (Hanks plays Elvis’s domineering manager, Col. Tom Parker.
2. Jurassic World: Dominion- The dinosaurs are roaming free and officially off the Jurassic World island closing the epic six-movie saga that started in 1993, and was one of the top summer hits.
1. Top Gun: Maverick- The absolute biggest movie of the year, the long awaited sequel to the 1986 blockbuster exceeded already extremely high hopes from movie fans. Top Gun Maverick made almost $1.5 billion over the summer of 2022, and proved that maybe Tom Cruise isn’t too old to still be doing action movies. The perfect mixture of summer fun, fast plane action, and emotion—it was the best movie of the year.
The Worst 5 Movies of 2022:
This was supposed to be a list of ten movies that were the worst of the worst for this year, but almost every person surveyed named the exact same movie, so there are only five . . . and one big loser.
5. Don’t Look Up- Overall, it wasn’t that this movie was terrible it was more that this movie had an amazing star studded cast that just fell short of viewers’ high expectations. Jennifer Lawerence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalemet, and Meryl Streep just didn’t put on the amazing performances that we are so used to seeing from such talent.
4. Fire Starter- The remake no one asked for, this adaptation of Stephen King’s novel by the same name was a real box office flop and was overall probably the worst horror/sci-fi movie of the year.
3. Lightyear- The movie itself was not bad, but because of Lightyear stemming from one of the most beloved Disney series the bar was set extremely high for all viewers. Though Chris Evans was a good Buzz Lightyear no one could top the original cast with Tim Allen and Tom Hanks. All beloved characters were missing, and though it was Buzz’s origin story it missed the Toy Story magic and the reviews showed.
2. Black Adam- The Rock could easily bring any superhero to life, and he chose this one?
1. Moribus- Not only did it fail in the box office once but it failed twice. Morbius gave off off-brand Batman vibes and didn’t live up to the Marvel standards which is why almost every single person asked named it the worst movie of 2022.
Now remember that these are all opinions so no fighting if you disagree with this list. Have fun watching in ‘23!
