Many student clubs convene throughout the year around the school, but sometimes meetings can become boring or tiresome. However, Beaver Area’s Spanish Club organized a fun and food-filled fiesta this past Wednesday kicking off the club’s “relaunch” that was anything but boring.
People of all ages and grades turned up to indulge in homemade flan, tres leches cake, “Family Feud” in Spanish, and Spanish conversation after school February 26, with the main goal being to have fun, engage, and maybe even attract some new club members.
“There were a ton of people who showed up for the games, food, and conversation, and it was a really fun time. We hope in the future we can keep people coming and that it will be a fun time for everyone!” said Spanish Club president senior Sarah Mateer.
Spanish Club meets after school where they aim to provide a fun, low judgement environment for Spanish students of all levels to expand their vocabulary and conversational skills while also learning more about Spanish culture.
Typical meetings consist simply of Spanish language conversation, but the club soon hopes to expand to include game days, Spanish culture days, and even days to cook and eat traditional Spanish foods.
This year’s officers include: Mateer and junior Jeff Allison as co-presidents, sophomore Madison Flaugh, secretary, and sophomore Ryan Kenney serving as treasurer.

“Getting involved is easy; just show up to a meeting! There is no commitment to come every week—just come when you’re able to and learn more about Spanish in a fun environment,” Mateer explained.
Spanish Club meets in Mr Hank’s room, Room 109, most Wednesdays after school. If you’re interested in attending or have any questions, see one of the club sponsors—Mrs. Zahn, Mr. Hank, or Ms. Bost/Mrs. Landy—or one of the officers for more information.
Freshman Audrey Maize, who was on the planning committee, shared her excitement about the reinvigorated Spanish Club’s success.
“The goal was to get people, but we never thought there’d be so many there! The turnout was huge and we were so pleased with it. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves as well, and even if people just came for the food I think they still had fun. I’d say the meeting was a success.”
