This season is different for the Beaver Area girls basketball team.
After losing a lot of talent after last season, the Lady Bobcats and Coach Greg Huston face a rebuilding year, but they won’t let that hold them back.
The Bobcats tipped off the regular season with an away scrimmage against Cannon McMillian High school December 10. The varsity beat the Lady Macs 49-40, and the JV also won 42-38.
“We knew coming into the second it was going to be a learning experience since we are mostly a young team, but as we keep getting on the court and working hard together, we see the team coming together better,” shared Payton List, the team’s only returning senior.
The next day, the girls traveled to South Fayette High School for their season Tip Off Tournament against the South Fayette Lions. The Bobcats’ hard work throughout the game was unfortunately not reflected on the scoreboard at the end of the game, resulting in a 39-22 loss for the girls. However, the JV girls were able to pull off a 35-32 win against the Lions.
December 13 the girls traveled to Freedom High School for their first section game of the season. The Bobcats were looking to start the regular season with a win, but unfortunately fell short resulting in a 32-28 loss again the Bulldogs. List carried most of the Bobcat scoring netting 22 points. The JV continued their win streak with a 45-21 win over Freedom.
With a few days to rest, December 16, the Bobcats had their season opener against Hopewell High School—and that rest paid off: the varsity team trounced the Vikings 53-16 while the JV squad secured an equally impressive 32-19 win.
“I feel so far we have been good, but we have some things we need to work on for the rest of the season,” said List about the road the team has ahead.
Additionally, a special congratulations goes to List for being named The Beaver County Times 2021 Girls Athlete of the Year!
Tonight the Lady Bobcats take on New Castle High School away at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support the girls before the holiday break!
