Well, our country could now be taking equality to a whole other level. Give Congress a few months and we may be adding an amendment to the Constitution that requires women to register for the U.S. military draft.
September 1, a panel of House Republicans voted to approve the National Defence Authorization Act which would require women ages 18-25 to register for the draft just as men have been doing throughout our country’s history. The final vote tallied a 35-24 approval from the GOP.
The bill was announced by Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who stated the reasoning behind it was to send a message to the women of our country that they are indeed needed for national security if the time came when the United States would go to war. The US hasn’t utilized a draft since the war in Vietnam.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but for once I agree with a Democrat.
If the United States was to go to war, I most certainly agree that we would need all hands on deck regardless of gender, race, religion, political opinion, etc. Not only that but as American citizens, it is our duty to protect our country if such a time came when we would go to war, because no matter what, at the end of the day we are all Americans.
Now I know I can’t speak for everyone in saying this but, personally, if our country went to war and drafted women, I would go and fight proudly. Once again, as an American citizen I believe that it would be my civic duty to help protect my country and keep us free. The fact of the matter is that if we don’t fight to protect our country and preserve our freedoms, future generations of Americans will never know how great this country once was.
So, I say that if women are needed to help defend our nation, then women should be eligible for draft just as the men are. No longer will it be just a man's job to fight in a war, but a duty for the ladies as well.
