The wins keep coming for the Beaver Area girls tennis team. Surprised? You shouldn’t be.
To finish section matches, the girls took a 5-0 win against Neshannock October 4. Sophomore Chloe Desanzo (first singles) and seniors Fiona and Isabel Rubino (second and third singles) all won their singles matches. Juniors Lily Pruszenski and Ella Peluso (first doubles) and sophomore Elle Taylor and senior Delaney Young (second doubles) both won their doubles matches.
“I’m so excited to play in WPIAL’s again this year, and I’m so proud of how hard our team has worked to get where we are,” shared Fiona Rubino.
October 6 four of the girls traveled to Bethel Park High School to compete in the WPIAL doubles tournament where the competition was fierce. WPIAL’s means that the girls face even tougher competition from schools with equally strong tennis programs.
Fiona Rubino and DeSanzo were the last Bobcats first doubles team who won their first match against The Ellis School in the first round, Sewickley Academy’s second doubles team in the quarter finals, but unfortunately lost to Sewickley Academy’s first-doubles team in the semi-finals.
The girls’ second-doubles duo was Isabel Rubino and Pruszenski who unfortunately lost to South Park’s first-doubles team.
The next day, October 7, was the WPIAL doubles consolation match. Fiona Rubino and DeSanzo played for third place and the opportunity to play in the state tournament. Unfortunately, the girls lost to Montour’s first-doubles team.
After the regular season, it was time for WPIAL’s team competition. The girls tennis team has appeared in WPIAL gameplay for years—so it’s time to add another year.
October 11 the girls had their first WPIAL team match against North Catholic High School. All the singles and doubles players won their matches giving the team a 5-0 win over the Trojans and a spot in the quarter finals.
Two days later came the quarter finals against Montour High School. Isabel Rubino (third singles), Peluso and Pruszenski (first doubles) and Taylor and Young (second doubles) all won their matches. Unfortunately, the completion in first and second singles was tough, leading DeSanzo and Fiona Rubino to lose to a Montour. However, the girls were still able to secure the 3-2 and move on to the semi-finals.
“I’m really proud of our team, but we aren’t done yet,” said Peluso. “If we can stay focused, I will be really excited to see how far we can go.”
The girls play Sewickley Academy in the WPIAL team semi-finals today at Moon Area High School at 3 p.m. and Wednesday either in the WPIAL team finals or the WPIAL consolation match for PIAA qualification. Good luck, girls!
