After the unexpected departure of principal Mr. Steve Wellendorf and the promotion of Mrs. Meghan Murray, a Dean of Students was added as an administrative position to the high school to handle student discipline concerns.
Mr. Chris Ortmann, a popular teacher among students for the past 11 years, was promoted from middle school history teacher to Dean of Students; however, it is up in the air about how long this change of jobs will last.
Mr. Ortmann holds his principal certification papers therefore qualifying him for the position.
Despite being new to the position Dean of Students and known to students as a middle school teacher, Mr. Ortmann is not new to administration work. In Spring 2016 he filled in for College Square principal Mrs. Jessica Hiles while she took maternity leave.
Despite missing the shenanigans of middle school, Mr. Ortmann does enjoy his new job, despite some downsides.
“I absolutely miss being in the classroom and joking around in the classroom,” shared Mr. Ortmann.
Having rarely any need to assign detentions while teaching in middle school, that is now one of Mr. Ortmann’s main responsibilities alongside handling truancy problems and the student assistance program.
The student assistance program (SAP) helps students who struggle with grades and regular school attendance.
“Taking on more responsibility in my new position is a great challenge, but my experiences have been very positive for the most part. I enjoy interacting with the high school students every day and getting to know more about them,” explained Mr. Ortmann.
