Game, set, match . . . The Beaver Area girls tennis team has started their season with a bang.
The varsity tennis team started their season August 17 with a scrimmage match at Moon Area High School.
They won the practice match 4-1, starting the season with a fire that’s barely flickered since.
Typical of that fire, September 6 at MACs, Beaver Area placed second out of 16 teams.
Junior Anna Mrkonja was the women's first singles runner-up medalist. Additionally, Junior Brynn Lasavage received a medal for second runner-up in singles.
The team is currently undefeated in their section with an outstanding record of 5-0 against Ellwood City, Lincoln Park, Riverside, Beaver Falls, and Neshannock.
The final varsity score for all of these matches was a 5-0 blanking.
Additionally, Mrkonja played a single match against Blackhawk last Thursday and earned the title of singles champion.
As for upcoming matches, the team heads to Central Valley today and then hosts Blackhawk September 23 for their senior night.
Both games start at 3:30 p.m. if any enthusiastic Beaver Area students want to watch the girls duke it out. (But keep that enthusiasm in check because sideline cheering is discouraged at tennis matches.)
Coach Janet DiTullio returns as head coach, but this year she’s assisted by Coach Victoria Moore, one of the district’s elementary teachers as well as one of Coach DiTullio’s former players.
Junior Anna Mrkonja stated that the season is “Going great both individually and as a team and I’m really excited for playoffs.”
Senior tennis player Hailey Ziegler added that overall she believes the team is doing really well, and she’s so proud of how much they’ve achieved already!
