National Honor Society (NHS) is a program for students who excel in four basic criteria: scholarships, leadership, service, and character.
NHS consists only of juniors and seniors who are inducted into the program each year. The students are invited by the organization to apply after meeting specific academic requirements and other requirements such as service hours, job hours, involvement in clubs or activities, and writing an essay.
To welcome the new inductees to the program, gift bags with their NHS pin, induction letter, and an NHS cookie were delivered to their front doors this year. Such NHS “pinning” day activities were, not-surprisingly, a bit different this year due to COVID issues. Normally, new inductees are called to the library at the start of the school day where they are pinned and share breakfast with the NHS sponsors and returning members.
Normally, the new inductees then would be inducted in an evening ceremony in the auditorium, but due to COVID-19 the ceremony was held virtually. December 17 the event was premiered on the WEKO—Beaver Area High School YouTube channel—where the new inductees were introduced.
“I was sad that we didn’t get to have our real NHS induction ceremony, but I’m grateful that the school was able to put something together for us for a ceremony,” shared new inductee junior Erin Bell.
NHS sponsors Ms. Brittany Coleman and Mrs. Kristina Graham introduced the inductees during the ceremony. Although it wasn’t the same as an in-person ceremony, the inductees’ pictures were displayed on the screen as they were welcomed into the program.
“Each of the new inductees was asked to pre-record themselves saying the NHS pledge and these videos were played during the event,” explained inductee junior Isabel Rubino.
Congratulations to the new NHS inductees!
