Do you know who the Assistant Superintendent is? No, didn’t think so.
Many may know about our new Superintendent, Dr. Mark Holtzman, yet his second in command, Ms. Emily Sanders, might have slipped by you.
Ms. Sanders graduated from Laurel High School in New Castle and earned her undergraduate degree at Clarion University before getting a graduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
Now entering her twenty-second year in education, this is her first as an assistant superintendent. She started her career as a middle school English teacher in Monesson City School District.
Ms. Sanders first realized her strength was in leadership when she was president of her college sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon.
Ms. Sanders noted her mother as her biggest inspiration for going into education.
Despite not being a middle school teacher anymore, Ms. Sanders hasn’t completely stopped teaching. She is also an adjunct professor at Waynesburg University and teaches two online courses: Literacy in Content Areas and Curriculum Design.
Ms. Sanders loves finding new strategies for teachers and finds great satisfaction when she can see how students and teachers can grow as a result of these strategies.
Despite her history with more English aligned subjects, Ms. Sanders said she would love to teach a class in the STEM field if she ever had the chance.
When asked about any interesting facts about herself, Ms. Sanders couldn’t think of anything, but soon enough, she opened up about her adrenaline junky trips she takes once a year.
Ms. Sanders and her husband go on annual road trips to different mountain passes, her favorite being the Tail of the dragon in Tennessee. The tail of the dragon is an 11 mile stretch with 318 curves around a ravine. She and her husband ride this every year on their motorcycle.
Ms. Sanders also has two dogs, Kimber and Rocky. She’s also a huge country music fan who recently attended a Morgan Wallen concert.
