Do a good deed this winter and donate to the Winter Coat Drive!
As the holiday season and winter weather rolls around once more, it’s just as important to stay warm as it is to take care of others.
This year, senior Kayla Cornell and junior Cannon Hoback have teamed up with One Warm Coat to host their own winter coat drive. The drive is based out of the high school, but it also includes the middle school, Dutch Ridge Elementary School, and College Square Elementary School. Each school has its own festively wrapped donation box located in its lobby.
Coats of all sizes and styles are welcomed. In addition to winter jackets, donations of gloves, hats, scarves, and snow pants are also greatly appreciated. The more, the merrier!
The coat drive began November 21 and runs through December 21, which is the last day of school before winter break.
Cornell and Hoback plan on delivering the coats to One Warm Coat as soon as the drive ends so that the clothing can be distributed before the holidays.
One Warm Coat is partnered with different local donation centers, so the coats will be donated, and from there the clothing will be distributed to Beaver County families in need.
Across the country, One Warm Coat has distributed over 7.3 million coats, held over 43,000 drives, and they’ve kept over 18 million pounds of textiles out of landfills.
If you do not have any spare items of warm winter clothing to donate but are still interested in supporting the cause, you can donate money online to https://onewarmcoat.salsalabs.org/owccoatdrive/p/cannonkaylaonewarmcoat/index.html.
“The total money we want to raise is about $250 online and however many coats we can. Cannon and I think we’re going to get a lot!” Cornell exclaimed.
So far, the duo has collected numerous coats, and the drive isn’t halfway done yet. In fact, Cornell noticed that some particularly eager students in the middle school even began to donate coats before the project officially started.
“They’re on the ball!” she praised.
This drive is a chapter project for the Future Business Leaders of America, or FBLA, which also means that Cornell and Hoback will have the opportunity to qualify for the club’s state competition.
You can contact Kayla Cornell at kmcst03@basd.k12.pa.us or Cannon Hoback at cjhst01@basd.k12.pa.us with any questions regarding the coat drive.
If you are able, please donate today. And remember: don’t take anything for granted.
