A great season came to a tough end in round one of the WPIAL playoffs for the boys basketball team.
Before the playoffs the Bobcats had a non-conference game February 3 at Keystone Oaks where they dominated and took home a 83-41 victory. Brady Mayo led the way with 22 points including four three-pointers.
The Bobcats extended their winning streak to five games February 7 when they hosted Ambridge on senior night. The Bobcats, for the second game in a row, won by more than 40 points with a 85-44 hammering of the Bridgers. The Bobcats had four different players hit double digit point totals including two seniors, Sawyer Butler and Gerrell Leaper.
“It was great to have all the students come out and support us on senior night,” said senior Alex Tomalski.
Next up for the Bobcats was a big section game at North Catholic February 10 that would have big implications on playoff seeding. The Bobcats saw their five-game win streak come to an end in a one-point loss by the score of 60-59. Brady Mayo again was the leading scorer with a 17 point game.
The Bobcats had one more game before the playoffs when they faced Mars High School February 13. The Bobcats were able to edge out a 61-58 win to end the regular season. Butler and Mayo were the Bobcats’ leading scorers with Mayo netting 18 points and Butler picking up 16 points.
The Bobcats opponent in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs was the South Allegheny Gladiators February 20. The Bobcats after trailing most of the game made a late comeback, but fell just short of the win falling to the Gladiators 59-57. The Bobcats had both Aiden Townsend and Butler score 13 points each.
“It was a great season, and it was the best Beaver has seen in a long time,” said senior Aiden Townsend.
The Bobcats finished the season with a 17-4 record going 8-4 in conference play while finishing third in the section.
“This year was a magical, unforgettable one,” said head coach Casey Kaiser.
“The program did things it never done before or hasn’t in a long time. We were the best public school [basketball team] in the section by far. I believe the label of ‘cake eaters’ is no longer on us. This year’s team will go down in history books and be talked about generations from now. As a coach I couldn’t be more proud of the season and look forward to getting back in the lab soon,” Coach Kaiser concluded.
