Time to towel off after a tough season for most of the Bobcat swimmers and divers.
The girls’ team officially ended their regular season with a record of 5-5 after starting with a 5-0 record but quickly floundering in the season’s second half. The boys’ had yet another tough losing season with a record of 4-6.
Both teams fell to West Allegheny and Blackhawk. The girls’ team also lost to Central Valley while the boys left victorious.
The final score against the Warriors was 97-78 for the girls and 84-35 for the boys.
On a positive note, prior to the meet the Bobcats presented their donation from their second annual Swim-A-Thon fundraiser to the Beaver County Women’s Shelter. The Bobcats raised a total of $2385, and half ($1172) was given to the shelter.
Event winners for the girls were junior team captain Lizzy Michael in 1 Meter diving and the 100 yard freestyle, as well as sophomore Ava Sutter in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke.
Senior team captain Brandon Osborne won the 200 yard individual medley and 500 yard freestyle, while senior co-captain Robert Cestra won the 100 and 200 yard freestyle.
Senior Reed Garrett won the 100 yard butterfly, and junior Eli Bechdel earned first in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Senior night was against the Cougars, but both boys and girls teams ended up with another loss.
There were seven Bobcat seniors recognized on senior night, and after the meet the infamous Buck-A-Duck was held (a fun tradition which fills the pool with rubber duckies).
Osbourne broke his own school record in the 100 yard breaststroke once again at the end of the meet.
Despite the losses, swimming isn’t all about the score and both teams had impressive times and cuts that were unreachable years prior.
Now it’s officially time for WPIAL training for the swimmers and diver who have qualified.
Junior and team captain Lizzy Michael will be the only diver to represent Beaver Area at the WPIAL championships March 2.
All three of the boys’ relays received their needed cuts, as well as Osborne receiving a slew of times allowing him to pick what events he wants to swim March 3 at the WPIAL swimming championships.
Junior Graham Lovra will also swim the 100 yard breaststroke.
WPIALs will be held at the University of Pittsburgh.
