The late Malcolm McCormick, better known as Mac Miller, had a new album release January 17 at midnight, making fans feel overwhelmed with emotion. The sixth album, released over a year after the rapper’s death is a follow-up to his fifth album: Swimming.
Miller was working on the album with Jon Brion before his death. Miller’s death inspired Brion to finish the album inspired by conversations he had with Miller. Miller’s family posted an Instagram explanation through Miller’s account explaining that “it is important to Malcolm that the world hears it [the album].”
Mac Miller fans agreed. Fans adored the album making it soar to the top of his Apple Music list, making most of the songs his most played. This response proves that although he’s gone, Miller’s talent and charisma will not be forgotten.
“I feel like the album is a clear picture of somebody with those troubles who is funny and intelligent and was trying to look at [those troubles] critically,” Brion said about the album.
The album is heartfelt and pure, giving sight into Miller’s mind in a way some feel his other albums hadn’t captured.
“I like that he’s singing a lot [on the album]. He said in an interview that he wanted to sing, but he was scared of what people thought. The album is so soulful and fire, everyone should give it a listen,” junior Mercy Seibert said.
The album was accompanied by pop-up shops in Pittsburgh, New York, and Los Angeles that honored Miller’s new album by selling merchandise and providing listening parties for lucky fans. Pittsburgh also honored the hometown hero January 19 by hosting a birthday party for the rapper at Stage AE.
