Yes, you heard that right. Carly Rae Jepsen, responsible for the 2012 smash hit “Call Me Maybe,” still makes music—and it’s actually really good.
Ten years ago, Jepsen broke through into the mainstream pop world with “Call Me Maybe” and never really returned to that world after that. Yet despite her short time on the charts and in the spotlight, she has consistently released albums for the past decade (five to be exact) and has developed her own small yet devoted following.
The story of Jepsen’s steadfast support does not start with “Call Me Maybe;” it starts three years later in 2015 with the release of her third album, Emotion. Emotion is credited as one of the best pop albums of the 2010s. A quick google search on the matter shows her album right up there.
It was clear with Emotion that Jepsen had successfully evolved her music from the classic early 2010s EDM filled pop to a more mature 80s inspired yet timeless sound.
“Be tormented by me, babe. Wonder, wonder how I do. How's the weather? Am I better? Better now that there's no you?” sings Jepsen on the title track of Emotion. The title track is a perfect representation of what this album brings to the table: witty lyrics, fast and catchy melodies, and booming, synth-filled production.
And those are the elements of Jepson’s music that attracted her super fans. From 2015 on, Jepsen now had a loyal audience flocking to her music due to their dissatisfaction with most other mainstream pop.
In 2016, Jepsen released Emotion Side B, an eight track EP of cuts off of her previous album. “Cry”, the sixth song of the EP, is a true to heart 80s synth ballad.
It was clear that Jepsen had found her stride.
She continued this with her 2019 and 2020 releases: Dedicated, and Dedicated Side B. Both albums are comprised of light-hearted synth-filled pure pop songs that her diehard listeners expected from her.
Both albums feature collaborations by super producer Jack Antonoff (well known to Taylor Swift fans) most notably on the song “Want You In My Room.”
The song is filled with quick drum beats and reverb-drenched guitar giving it an immensely nostalgic feel.
Although Jepsen deftly channels her inner 80s, she is never overwhelmed by it. Each release still sounds fresh as if it could have been released in any year.
Now, in 2022, Jepsen has released her sixth studio album, The Loneliest Time. This release is exactly what you would expect from the pop star. Heavy disco beats, synths, choruses, and strings are layered throughout the songs to bring listeners that free feeling pop she is so good at.
The Loneliest Time’s title track even has some mainstream success due to the social media platform TikTok. Lyrics from the song’s bridge have been used in tens of thousands of videos garnering millions of likes and millions more views.
“What happened was, We reached the moon, But lost in space I think we got there all too soon, But you know what, I'm coming back for you, baby, I'm coming back for you,” sings Jepsen on the bridge of the most popular song she has put out in a decade.
You can listen to the new album—and all her past ones—on all major streaming services. If you’re in the mood for real pop music, check her out maybe.
