“To overcome youth and inexperience is our biggest challenge,” said Coach Greg Houston.
But it certainly looks like Coach Houston’s team is handling the challenge.
The new year has been great for the Bobcats’ girls basketball team. Their record stands at 10-2, and 4-1 in their section. And while it may be a rebuilding year for the boys, the ladies have their house well in order.
“I have faith in my team to make playoffs, but I hope we get as far as states,” said senior Qhamille Monteiro.
The first game of the new year was a heartbreaking loss against Avonworth 63-61 January 3. With 0.8 seconds left on the clock the referees called a foul on Beaver. That foul was all Avonworth needed: two free shots which won them the game.
The girls were quick to rebound after the tough loss winning big on Beaver’s home court facing Mohawk January 7 with a final score 64-30.
The following game the Bobcats sunk the Vikings’ ship, with another victory. Beaver played at Hopewell with the final score 42-34 January 8.
“Right now we are on track for playoffs, but we still have a lot to do,” stated Coach Houston.
It also turns out that Cats aren’t afraid of dogs, Bulldogs that is. Continuing the winning streak the ladies defeated the Freedom Bulldogs January 10. The final score from that well-fought battle was a surprisingly low 33-27. But a win is still a win.
“The fact that we are this young and competing so well is amazing. I didn’t expect the record to be this good,” admitted Coach Houston.
The Lady Cats host the Beaver Falls Tigers tonight as their next stop on the road to playoffs. See you in the gym.
