The Beaver Area Bobcats girls tennis team is swinging into this year’s season with an exciting 4-1 record.
In their first three section matches, the team beat South Fayette, Seneca Valley, Ellwood City, and Neshannok—but were defeated with a 3-2 score against rivals Sewickley Academy. The team then picked up a win against Riverside.
Head Coach Janet Ditullio and Assistant Coach Nate Heidengren are looking forward to guiding this team into states, and hopefully beating Sewickley Academy for the section title.
“Sewickley Academy won sections last year, and this year we are hoping to beat them,” said senior Mia Woodske.
Some returning stars of this season who are showing special promise are senior Chloe DeSanzo and sophomore Anna Mrkonja.
The team is mainly looking forward to states, but when asking the team about what they were also looking forward to, the players responded enthusiastically about a very much non-tennis related aspect of their season.
“We're looking forward to getting [Coach] Nate [Heidengren] his cape," said freshman Lucy Taylor.
Cape? What's the deal with this cape?
You may know Assistant Coach Heidengren from being a Beaver Area High School hall monitor and super sub. When Heidengren was telling the players about what he did around the school, the players were skeptical about his title of “super sub,” thinking he had made it up.
(Super subs are new this year to the high school. Essentially, they are full-time substitute teachers who come to the school every day ready at a moment’s notice to cover for an absent staff member.)
Once the team understood that the title is in fact legitimate, the team decided to take the “super” aspect of the name to another level and are now giving the man his own special cape for the season.
Make sure to root for Beaver Area’s own “super” tennis team this season, and keep an eye out for that cape—Go Cats!
