Though not quite the ace they’d hoped for, the boys tennis team won two of their last three matches to help solidify themselves heading into WPIAL’s.
The Bobcats looked to avenge the loss to Central Valley when they faced Riverside April 4. The boys lost a tough match 4-1 with senior Zack Masters as the only player to win his match.
Next up for the Bobcats was Elwood City April 5 when all players won their respective matches. Zane Atkins, Masters, Andrew Cavett, Ian McCarty-Cogis, and Joey Pruszenski were the five players who won their matches.
Those same five players all won their matches again April 10 when the Bobcats faced Beaver Falls on senior night.
Cavett was the only player that competed in the WPIAL singles April 11 where he fell to Montour 10-5.
Beaver Area hosted a MAC Championship tournament April 14 where everyone qualified for the second round in the second singles division bracket. In the third singles division Atkins qualified for the semifinals before falling to Montour.
April 18 Masters and Cavett traveled to Blackhawk for the section doubles semifinals competing for a spot in the section doubles championship. The duo came away with the win defeating Sewickley Academy’s second team, clinching a spot in the championship.
The next day April 19 Masters and Cavett fell to Sewickley Academy’s first team in the championship. Despite the loss they still qualified for WPIAL doubles which will take place April 25 and 26.
“We’re going to do pretty well; we just have to work on communicating better and we should be fine,” predicted Cavett.
“I think overall, [Cavett and Masters] played really well, especially in regards to who they played: Sewickley Academy. They made some mistakes in the first set that hurt them but they battled back in that second set to win and just couldn't hold on in the third set. I think they're looking really good for Tuesday [April 25] when they play in the WPIAL doubles tournament,” said head coach Nate Heidengren.
Best of luck to Cavett and Masters!
