The Bobcats girls basketball team are on the roll and don’t plan on stopping for anyone.
A huge game against the Blackhawk Cougars February 22 ended up with a close win for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats lagged behind a few points throughout the game. But late in the fourth quarter, when the game was tied, birthday girl senior Anna Blum stole the ball and had a breakaway layup that put the Bobcats ahead and changed the tempo of the fourth quarter.
Even later in the fourth, the Bobcats were down 32-31. Senior Emma Pavelek brought the ball up past half court and drove to the hoop.
Pavelek made the quick decision to pass the ball out to the wing to guard senior Maddi Weiland. Weiland had only made one other three pointer in the first quarter, so was she saving it all up for this moment?
“In my head I was thinking, ‘She’s got this. She’s made this shot a million times,’’’ recalled Pavelek.
Weiland shot the ball with two second left on the game clock. The ball fell and the Bobcat bench errupted.
“I was very excited, but I couldn’t stop shaking. I think my body went into shock. The game is never over until it is actually over when you play Blackhawk, so I didn’t want to celebrate too early either. Once that clock went off though, I was stoked,” explained Weiland.
With little time to rest, the Bobcats faced the Ambridge Bridgers the next day where they completely blew out the Bridgers 68-30.
After a few days’ rest, the Bobcats then had to face the Burrell Bucs March 2 at home.
They went on to soundly defeat the Bucs 59-20.
Payton List who turned 17 that day led the Bobcats to the win with an outstanding 24 points.
March 5 the Bobcats took on the Elizabeth Forward Indians at home.
Once again the powerhouse Bobcats went on to defeat Indians 49-36.
But the game looked a little rocky at first. After a rough start to the game, the Bobcats ground out of the ditch they dug for themselves. Pavelek sat out most of the second quarter due to three fouls early in the game. List rolled her ankle in the second quarter, but we have no word yet on how she is doing.
Due to COVID-19, playoffs are held a little differently this year. The higher seed of the two competing teams hosts the game rather than playing in a neutral gym.
With the Bobcats being seeded at number one, they will be home for the entire playoff ride until the WPIAL finals which are held at a larger school that is in the 5A or 6A section.
And the way the Bobcats are playing this season, we can count on a trip to that larger venue.
