With the refreshing start to the spring season comes a fresh set of matches to be played in the 2019 Bobcat Boys’ tennis season.
“I think it’s a pretty solid team: five starters back from last year, and working with a couple new players who are playing pretty well,” stated Coach Riley Baker who is in his 35th year coaching Beaver Area tennis.
The season opener was at Beaver Area’s home courts March 18, as the Bobcats faced the Riverside Panthers. But it was a rough start for the boys as they lost 4-1 with Bobcat first singles Kane Mateer securing Beaver’s only win.
But they soon found their game as the boys took a trip to Ellwood City March 26 to bring home the gold. The Bobcats came out on top against the Wolverines with a new 4-1 dub'. Winning for the Cats were second singles Alex Young, third singles Jeffery Allison, first doubles Sammy Kissick and Gil Hankinson, and second doubles Tyler King and Braden Sistek.
Beaver then brought the fight back to their home courts. March 27, the Bobcats faced their court rivals the Blackhawk Cougars. The Bobcats overhead smashed another win, with a 4-1 score yet again. Winning for Beaver were first singles Mateer, second singles Young, first doubles Kissick and Hankinson, and second doubles King and Sistek.
“The season so far is pretty great, the team is 2-1 and looking forward to making playoff,” said Hankinson.
But before that can happen, the team has some work to do.
“We need to work on being more consistent and being more aggressive. With more practice, I think the team can make playoffs,” Coach Baker said.
Come see the action for yourself, as the Bobcats take on Beaver Falls April 2—and Beaver will have home court advantage.
