The boys’ lacrosse team wrapped up their inaugural season after getting some game experience that will help prepare them for the day they eventually play in the WPIAL.
After playing their first two games against West Allegheny, the Bobcats faced a new opponent when they traveled to Hickory May 5. The Hornets overpowered the Bobcats cruising to an 18-1 victory. The lone Bobcat goal in the game was scored by sophomore Cade Askar.
For the third and final time, the Bobcats played West Allegheny with this match being held at home May 7. Beaver Area jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and would carry it into the second quarter thanks to a goal from senior Trevor Schmidt.
The Indians pulled ahead in the second quarter and go up comfortably, but that didn’t stop the Bobcats from scoring as Askar scored twice in the second half, making the final score 10-3—a loss but a solid showing for the new Cats team.
The final game of the Bobcats’ inaugural season was at home against Winchester Thurston May 12. Beaver Area stood their ground for the first half before the Bears pulled away in the second half for the 9-4 win. Beaver Area’s four goals were scored by Schmidt and Askar who both netted two.
After practicing all of last spring, the Bobcats finally got to play in games against other teams, marking the first time competitive lacrosse has been played at Beaver Area.
“It was exciting to be part of something new and be the first ever players on a roster for a lacrosse team at Beaver,” said senior Derrick Anderson.
Beaver Area will continue as a club sport for the next few years before they take the jump to joining the WPIAL, and they will keep scheduling games to play against other opponents that are newly established programs until then.
