The 2023 track season is moving just as fast as the Beaver Area runners at every meet.
The Bobcats ran against Avonworth and Northgate in a tri-meet April 11. The track and field team left this tri-meet victorious on the boys’ side in the field but left with a loss on the track and the girls’ teams lost in a close matchup.
On the track the girls lost with a final score of 46-40 and a score of 70-66 in the field. For the girls, junior Izzy Meadows won the 300 meter hurdles while senior Ella Andrew ran into first in the 800 yard and 2 mile runs.
Junior Delaney Thomas won the shot put event while sophomore Lilia Batalini won the triple jump.
The boys lost on the track by only one point with a final score of 44-43, but they won in the field with a much larger victory of 87-54.
Junior Dom Bumblis won the mile for the boys, freshman Issac Burt earned first in the 300 meter hurdles, and junior Eli Bechdel won the 800 and 3200 meter runs.
Senior Dylan Young won the shot put and discus events while senior Louie Rabatin won the javelin throw in the field.
Junior Amari Jackson took home a win in the triple jump event.
The Bobcats then traveled to Riverside High School April 15 to compete in the Beaver County Championships. This was a competitive meet with 15 schools from all over the county participating.
The girls earned third place at this meet with a final score of 69 points falling behind Hopewell with 110 points and hosts Riverside with 102 points.
The boys placed eighth out of 12 teams at this meet with a total score of 29 points.
There were only two first-place finishes coming from the Bobcats at this meet, and both of these were on the girls’ team: Andrew had a winning 800 meter run with a final time of 2:28.42, and junior Lizzy Michael not only beat her competition for the meet but beat her own school record in the pole vault with the final height of 10 feet 2 inches.
“My coach [Maria Miocic] had the previous record, and she was the one telling me to go for it,” Michael said.
Hopefully, with their eight remaining meets, the track and field teams will cross the finish line with some more wins.
