Do you have a Valentine this year? If not, that’s okay!
Most associate Valentine’s Day with lovers celebrating each other with cards and gifts. As a result, the romantically challenged among us may feel left out or even angry. When you don’t have a Valentine, it’s definitely easy to feel like this.
But sometimes people don’t see the big picture.
This holiday traces its origins to 269 as a feast in honor of Christian Saint Valentine. The story goes that during the third century, Emperor Claudius II of Rome declared that unmarried men without families made better soldiers and thus banned marriages for young soldiers.
Saint Valentine was a Christian priest who saw the ban as an injustice and married young couples in secret. It is also said that he helped many Christians escape persecution under Roman rule.
Since then, the holiday has slowly evolved into the version we celebrate today. The holiday also is celebrated in some other cultures around the world but celebrated differently than we do it in the United States, which leaves one thing for certain—Valentine’s Day is not just about heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and roses from a significant other, and it never was.
Valentine’s Day is for people who love love regardless of relationship status. Whether you’re sending flowers and candies to a partner, making cards for friends and family, or treating yourself to a fancy dinner, Valentine’s Day is meant to celebrate love of all kinds, not just romantic.
With that said, if you’re upset about not having a Valentine this year, don’t worry. You don’t have to. There are plenty of fun things you can do to celebrate this holiday, either together with others or by yourself, like:
• Making cards to give to friends and classmates. Handwritten notes are always adorable, but your cards could be store bought too. And remember: everyone loves getting temporary tattoos of dinosaurs (that never come off in time) and puppy pencils with their card.
• Baking treats for anyone you’d like. Cupcakes and cookies are always great options that almost anyone is sure to like. Red velvet cake is fun and festive.
• Sending a few candy-grams to your friends. Candy-grams cost $1 each, and can be purchased during fifth and sixth period lunches. The last day to buy is February 8, so don’t delay!
• If you want to do something that Miley Cyrus would approve of, buy yourself flowers. Flowers instantly cheer up any space, and they smell good too.
• Watching your favorite movie. Bonus points if you decide to put on a rom-com.
• Having a self-care night. You could treat yourself to a warm bath, a special dinner, a fresh manicure, or whatever else makes you feel refreshed.
• Volunteer somewhere and share your love with others. Whether that be at an animal shelter, the adoption center, a school sponsored program, or another organization, your help anywhere would be very much appreciated.
Happy Valentine’s Day! Have fun and remember: you deserve to enjoy a special holiday regardless of your relationship status.
