Millions of people every year tune in to watch the illustrious Super Bowl and its exciting “concert” in the middle. This year, the multitalented Grammy winner Rihanna performed her most popular hits during the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Let’s just say I was underwhelmed.
The Halftime Show is one of the most anticipated performances of the year. Over the years, tons of important and hugely popular entertainers have participated such as Katy Perry, Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, U2, and Michael Jackson. As everyone else, I was expecting a performance that was full of life and exciting. With Rihanna, I assumed she would bring the energy to the table. Yet I was met with disappointment.
Compared to past halftime shows, Rihanna’s seemed to lack much flavor. Rihanna has gotten 14 number-one hits and has gotten 31 top-ten songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and this is what she delivered us?
Her lack of passion in this performance showed. She hasn’t performed in over five years, making this appearance her highly anticipated comeback performance. This show did not have much energy, which is a shame since Rihanna is such a good performer. In retrospect, many of her other performances have made her halftime show look weak in comparison. (Maybe her pregnancy played some part?)
The performance started with Rihanna and her dancers suspended on platforms in the stadium. Elevated platforms add immensely to any artist’s performance—the opening was honestly the best part of the whole show that sadly ended within a minute.
Her backup dancers stole the show, taking the focus from her, the main performer. Without her backup dancers filling up the stage with their energy, this performance would be worse than it already was.
Additionally the performers’ costumes were bland, and though not every performance needs an outfit change, this one very much needed some change of color or something.
This is the Halftime Show; this is not just a concert. The performance should be entertaining at all times, adding in different sets and materials. Yet I found myself growing bored during this show.
There were some highlights of the show though. The most enjoyable parts of this halftime show were when she performed “We Found Love”, “Only Girl (In The World)”, and the finale with the gorgeous “Diamonds.”
Yet despite the highlights, this performance was weak, lackluster, and bland. Rihanna could have done much more, especially with her amount of talent and creativity. The opportunities are endless. Only a few good moments were spliced into the overall boring performance. Though not the worst halftime show of the Super Bowl (looking at you, Maroon 5) it was definitely not the best.
