Beaver Area High School’s bocce team is off to a bumpy start to their season.
Currently the team’s record is 0-2, but thankfully the games played so far this season were only “friendlies”. Meaning, they are nothing more than practice games/scrimmages.
The team actually is split into two different teams, each team having eight players: “The Beaver Bocce Boyz” and “The Beaver Bocce Bandits.”
"I’m excited for the team to win!” said Bandit Micah Mamone.
The bocce squad practices a couple times each week at their home gym perfecting their sport.
Plus the grind doesn't stop for this hardworking group: "We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we can beat anyone,” claimed Bandits captain Dan Dikec.
For the first game of the season the bocce squad traveled to Rochester January 18. Although they came home with a loss, they scored plenty of experience.
"We could improve on accuracy and consistency with each roll,” said Coach Rachael Fleming.
The learning Bobcats took on the Southside Rams in Beaver’s home gym January 25. Sadly the cats were defeated again but have gained even more experience for the upcoming sectional games.
“We need to improve on our communication skills and acclimating to other schools’ gymnasiums in order to become champions,” shared Captain Dikec.
Their next match is February 19 against Ambridge on the Bobcats’ home court.
