The Beaver Area High School girls soccer team knew their season would be tough this year, but they aren’t going down without a fight.
September 17 the Lady Bobcats took on North Catholic High School, the hardest team in their section. Unfortunately, the girls did not come out with a win; they lost 4-0.
“Our team didn’t get the results we wished for, but we improved tremendously from last year’s game against North Catholic. Everyone worked super hard and never gave up on the game, which is very difficult when you’re playing down. Overall, the game will make us better players and help us improve on ball skills, positioning, and mentality,” shared junior Julia Pizzella.
Three days later, September 21, the girls played Avonworth High School at home. Although the game was tied 1-1 for a while, the Avonworth Antelope girls came back and scored two goals, resulting in another loss for the Bobcats, 3-1.
“Avonworth was not our best game, but the loss was important because after that we as a team knew we needed to step up and motivate each other to play harder,” sophomore Abigail Noah reflected.
After two troubling losses the ladies were desperate for a win—but the next game still wasn’t the reprieve they were looking for.
September 23 the girls faced the Bridgers of Ambridge High School. The teams played well against each other, but yet again the girls could not emerge with a win let alone a ball in the back of the net. Another heartbreaking loss, 1-0.
“I felt it wasn’t our best game and we still have a long way to go to meet our potential. We have to keep our heads up and keep working hard. The season is not over yet,” said junior Elstasia Ray.
While times are tough right now, the captains are working together to find ways to bring out the heart and drive of the team even more.
“Struggling is not fun when it comes to losing sporting events, but the team is still strong in other ways. We all come together and see what ways we can do better. Our team has so much love for each other that we can do anything we put our minds to if we want it. We just have to continue to have team pep-talks to get to the heart of the game,” senior captain Maegan Martin shared.
The Bobcats played Freedom High School, a single-A school while Beaver competes in AA, in a non-section matchup September 26 at home hoping for a confidence boost, but lost 4-3 after a nail-biting overtime where Freedom scored to secure the win.
The season is not nearly over yet and the team still has time for improvement.
The girls play tonight at 7 p.m. at Quaker Valley High School. Hopefully that improvement begins on the Quakers’ pitch.
