The Umbrella Academy has arrived as Netflix’s newest hit show, joining the ranks of some of Netflix’s other top shows like Stranger Things and Queer Eye.
The show opens in the Soviet Union in 1989 with a young girl at a swim lesson. She jumps in the pool and suddenly is surrounded by her own blood miraculously giving birth to a baby girl despite never being pregnant. Similar spontaneous births occur to 43 other unlinked women around the world.
Billionaire inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) adopts seven of these miracle children, thus creating his own special family. As he raised the children, he learned of their unique special powers. He trained them through their childhood to save the world once they got older.
The show then fast-forwards to present day where each of the children now live their own separate lives. Luther, or Number One (Tom Hopper) lives in solitude on the moon. Number Two, or Diego (David Castañeda) is an incredibly skilled knife thrower. He’s shown killing a band of murderers robbing a small family thus saving the innocent family’s lives.
Number Three, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is an extremely successful actress swarmed by paparazzi on the red carpet. Her power is unclear in this scene but is later revealed. Number Four, played by Robert Sheehan, is just getting out of rehab at the beginning of the story. He’s shown buying more pills straight after leaving rehab.
Numbers Five and Six are skipped over, and Number Seven, or Vanya (Ellen Page) is shown playing the violin onstage only to stop abruptly as someone enters the room.
Each of the kids gets word that their father has died and the show cuts to each of them visiting their father’s home and seeing their adopted siblings for the first time in ten years.
While this first episode introduces key characters and their qualities, it also leaves you wondering about a lot thereby drawing you in right away.
The story reveals more details along the way, showing you how Allison can use her power to get people to do anything she wants. Klaus’s power is later revealed as well: he can communicate with the dead.
Number Five shows up halfway into the first episode—but amazingly he’s still a child . . . well, not just any child but a time-travelling 58-year-old stuck inside his childhood body.
The rest of the season is about the family’s attempt to save the world from an impending apocalypse brought on by an as-yet-unknown force.
The show is a thrilling story of time travel, adventure, and loss. If you haven’t seen it yet, giving it a watch would be highly recommended.
