The girls tennis team swings into, yet again, another promising season!
The past couple of years, the Beaver Area High School girls tennis team has been almost unstoppable, with players continuously making it to WPIALs or states.
In fact, Beaver Area girls tennis sits atop all other district sports as the winningest program of all.
This year is no different, except for the Coronavirus now standing in their way.
“We should expect to make it far in the WPIAL and hopefully make it to states, but we aren’t sure what everything is going to look like. We just found out they are changing the usual format for the singles and doubles tournaments due to COVID-19,” explained sophomore Ella Peluso. “Hopefully that won’t affect our run to states.”
The teams in the Bobcats’ section include: Ambridge, Ellwood City, Riverside, Beaver Falls, Blackhawk, Central Valley, and Neshannock. But there are mixed feelings on which among them is this year’s biggest challenge.
“The hardest team we play is definitely Knoch High School, which is out of section,” said junior Fiona Rubino.
“The best team we play is easily Peters Township High School,” stated Peluso. “We lost, but it was technically an out of section scrimmage, so not anything to beat ourselves up over.”
Despite the hard matches, the girls remain undefeated in section play and had two singles play in the WPIAL singles tournament.
Senior Anna Blum and Rubino both made it to the section singles final, September 16, meaning they had to play against each other.
“I lost in section singles against Anna, but it was a really good match, and it’s great that we both made it that far,” said Rubino, proudly.
Both girls then played in the WPIAL singles tournament September 24. Rubino lost in the second round to South Park; however, Blum made the top five.
“After I won the section for singles, I placed fourth in the WPIAL,” shared Blum.
Blum and her partner freshman Chloe DeSanzo, along with Rubino and her twin sister junior Isabel Rubino, will be advancing to the WPIALs doubles tournament in the coming weeks.
Although Rubino and Blum seem like the team standouts, the whole team is playing incredibly and Peluso sees great things ahead for the team.
“Hopefully for section doubles, we are able to lock that final as ours too,” concluded Peluso.
