Get your golden tickets ready because this December Willy Wonka is back in this blast of the past origin, musical film with a total of seven spectacular songs: Wonka directed by Paul King is the latest adaptation of the popular character from the classic books by Roald Dahl.
Wonka stars the charismatic Timothée Chalamet (known for his role in the sci-fi dystopian epic Dune) as the whimsical Wonka in the story of how he built his world of “pure imagination”.
“Every good thing in this world starts with a dream, so you hold onto yours,” Wonka’s mother (played by Sally Hawkins) lovingly tells him in his youth, and Wonka’s wonderful dream is to be the world’s most famous and best chocolatier.
And every famous genius has to start somewhere: in this case, Wonka is a young eccentric inventor often showcasing his wild crazy inventions to a very uptight, bleak town. It’s there that he finds a friend and confidante in the young but wise orphan, Noodle, who’s played by talented newcomer Calah Lane. Noodle is naive Wonka’s foil being more streetwise and grounded, but together these two make the perfect team—as people say: “opposites attract”.
Soon Wonka attracts a crowd with one of his fascinating chocolate treats that can make people fly bringing the fun and joy that no one in this town has felt before.
However, with positives come negatives, and the town’s chocolate cartel, Slugworth, Fickelgruber, and Prodnose, pompous men portrayed by Paterson Joseph, Matthew Baynton, and Matt Lucas, their characters inspired by the three rival chocolatiers in the books who always steal secret recipes from Wonka, conspire with each other against Wonka.
Nonetheless, as we know, Wonka will defy the odds and manifest his wonderful dream of his chocolate factory with help from an Oompa-Loompa of course. Lofty the Oompa-Loompa is played by Hugh Grant (which caused some controversy since Grant isn’t a little person).
Controversy aside, this movie has drawn positive applause from critics for Chalamet’s joyful performance as Wonka.
The rest of Wonka cast also includes Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Coleman, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Tom Davis, and Simon Farnaby.
Wonka arrives in theaters December 15.
