The Beaver Area girls soccer team was ranked nearly last in their section during the preseason predictions, but they came out ready to prove everyone wrong.
And prove they did.
The girls’ team is currently number-one in there section, and they don’t plan on giving that up. The girls worked hard all through preseason and it shows on the field and in the record book.
The girls kicked off their season August 30 with an overtime win against the Blackhawk Cougars, 1-0.
“Going into our first actual season game against a triple-A school [Blackhawk] was a little nerve wracking, but this helped us keep our motivation up and cause for us to play hard, and we ended up getting our first season win against a triple-A school,” said sophomore Elle Ray.
The girls unfortunately hit a bump when they took on the Central Valley Warriors August 31 at home, losing 5-0.
However, the Bobcats didn’t stay too down after that loss; they came out and fought hard against Montour September 4, although the score did not reflect their hard work, 3-1.
The team’s section games started September 7 and the girls did not disappoint; they beat the Avonworth Antelopes 1-0.
“It was our first section game, and we played hard. We wanted that win and we were first to the ball, had great touches, fought hard to the ball, and never gave up. That caused us to get a win for our first section game,” said freshman Kat Eck.
The team continued their winning streak September 9 against Keystone Oaks winning 3-0.
“For the majority of the game we were the first ones to the ball and kept possession. This really helped us keep the ball in Keystone Oaks’ half for most of the game and getting the win,” said sophomore Sara Majors.
The Lady Bobcats ran into some trouble against the North Catholic Trojans September 11 losing 2-0.
But one bad game didn’t hold back these girls; they quickly recovered and beat the Steel Valley Ironmen in double overtime. The winning goal was scored by senior Haeley Jones.
“Nothing like a second year of double overtime and a promise for Chick-fil-a! We all played our hearts out and kept going even if we were getting discouraged. Some people played 100 minutes straight, but they never let up the pressure. It was a well deserved victory that hopefully can help us get a spot in playoffs,” said senior Meghan Shelatz.
The team’s next game will be tonight against the Hopewell Vikings at Hopewell at 6:30 p.m.
