Have you been following the most recent social media trend at Beaver Area? Many sports teams across the school, including tennis, swim, volleyball, girls’ soccer, and girls’ basketball, have created Instagram accounts run by the players and coaches. It’s so popular that even the athletic office has created one!
Most of these accounts provide information that the teams wish to share. Everything from game times, final scores, and players of the game have been featured across a variety of accounts. Player and captain introductions can be found as well if needed.
In one particular case, the volleyball team created and posted a minute and a half professional video promoting the team’s players and games. This video spread across the district, quickly reaching over 2,000 views.
Accounts like the volleyball team’s, known as @beaverareavolleyball run by Coach Pollins, Chloe List, and Sophia Sharpless, have quickly spread throughout the school, making it difficult to find a team without some social media presence. Some accounts, like the swim and tennis teams, have taken to posting more personal pictures to go along with their information.
These accounts give students a glimpse into a team’s spirit and passion. Not to mention, the ownership of accounts creates a fun tradition to be passed down from team member to team member, connecting athletes with one another in a way that’s exciting and creative.
Senior Madison Piontek said, “I follow a good number of the teams; [the accounts] make me want to go to the games!”
The growth of these particular accounts has caused more students to be interested and informed about the various sporting events going on around the school. The Dam, Beaver Area’s student section, has been growing at games and matches that in previous years hadn’t seen much student support. Students are excited to attend matches other than the usual Friday night football game.
“[The accounts are] a good way for the team to connect to the students,” said senior Mia Woodske, co-owner of the @bhs10s account along with Chloe Desanzo, “and it also keeps parents and team members informed.”
Accounts like @bhs10s, @beavergirlssoccer_ , handled by Madeline Boser, Katie Reap, and Gracie Turyan, and @beaverswimanddive, run by myself and Ava Sutter, also help promote teams that haven’t received as much recognition as other programs despite their recent successes.
Making information about game times accessible and developing excitement around the teams has been a key role in the posts these athletes are making.
